MAXIMISING THE APPEAL OF AUSTRALIAN MOVIES WITH AUSTRALIAN AUDIENCES

Film Finance Corporation Australia

June 2008

Results of a recent study commissioned by the FFC clearly show there are considerable opportunities for Australian films to compete on equal terms with international and Hollywood movies.

The FFC commissioned Bergent Research to analyse how Australian films are perceived by local audiences and to test the truth of the anecdotal theory that Australians do not want to see Australian films.

With clients such as 20th Century Fox, Village Roadshow, Universal, BVI, Warner Bros, many local producers and AFTRS, Bergent Research has extensive experience in the film industry. Each week, Bergent (in conjunction with OTX in the USA) measures the appeal of major film releases in Australia on behalf of the major studios. This amounts to hundreds of films per year. Bergent has applied similar techniques to uncover the true attitudes and behaviours of Australian filmgoers in a controlled experimental environment.

Bergent Research has found that Australian films do NOT suffer an intrinsic disadvantage compared to international films. Australian audiences are not prejudiced against Australian films.

However, in order to perform well, particularly against Hollywood offerings, Australian films need to target a mainstream audience by developing strong, well executed, ad-publicity campaigns.
